Online Services: Groundhog Day

Cloud Services clients might feel a bit like Phil Connors stuck in a loop of product launches.

If you’ve seen the movie “I Got You, Babe” is the song that played over… and over… and over again in the 1993 hit Bill Murray movie, Groundhog Day.

With recent announcement of Office 365 this past week, and with Google+ in Beta. Somehow we’ve seen this before.

Microsoft announced that Business Productivity Online Standard Suite (BPOS) was the end-all cloud solution when it was available for purchase Nov 17, 2008. Even after expanding its capabilities in Nov of 2009, it really never took off. With Office 365 existing BPOS customers will have to migrate.

Google Wave was all the rage not too long ago. It was just May of 2009 at the Google I/O Conference that Lars Rasmussen presented a new Google application called “Google Wave” that should have revolutionized the way to communicate and collaborate on-line. The new Google immediately took positive comments and was poised as one of the most promising tools of 2010. But the initial enthusiasm was short lived and Google waved goodbye to this initiative.

There are exactly 38 days depicted in the movie either partially or in full. Let’s hope that it will not take that many iterations of cloud services for someone to get it right.
