Office 365 and PowerShell

I've seen a number of questions from Office 365 users about issues with performing administrative tasks such as managing domains, users, groups, and subscriptions via the normal web user interface. If you should ever have an issue with Office 365 be sure to consider using the PowerShell cmdlets provided by MSFT to resolve your issues.

Click one of the following links to find the cmdlets for a particular Office 365 management task, or to learn more about Microsoft Exchange Online cmdlets.

Every Lync in a chain of updates

Subscribers of Microsoft's office 365 services can review upcoming planned maintenance through the support tab of the administration console. Although they do not communicate the specific updates being rolled out they do provide you with a job id ex "LY1299. The details allow you to assess the impact if any that you may experience. This is something we don't always get from our on premise IT service.

Looking at the maintenance for January you will see Microsoft's focus on enhancing the Lync user experience and functionality.

Be sure to visit the Office 365 Technical Blog for details that are associated with these recent updates.

Microsft Online Services Diagnostics and Logging Support Toolkit

Microsoft has created MOSDAL a support toolkit that collects system configuration, network configuration, and logging information for service-based products that are installed on the system. The logs that the tool generates provide data that helps technical support professionals troubleshoot. MOSDAL collects log files, registry keys, and configuration settings that would otherwise require time-consuming and labor-intensive collection by using separate tools.

Online Services: Groundhog Day

Cloud Services clients might feel a bit like Phil Connors stuck in a loop of product launches.

If you’ve seen the movie “I Got You, Babe” is the song that played over… and over… and over again in the 1993 hit Bill Murray movie, Groundhog Day.

With recent announcement of Office 365 this past week, and with Google+ in Beta. Somehow we’ve seen this before.

Microsoft announced that Business Productivity Online Standard Suite (BPOS) was the end-all cloud solution when it was available for purchase Nov 17, 2008. Even after expanding its capabilities in Nov of 2009, it really never took off. With Office 365 existing BPOS customers will have to migrate.

Google Wave was all the rage not too long ago. It was just May of 2009 at the Google I/O Conference that Lars Rasmussen presented a new Google application called “Google Wave” that should have revolutionized the way to communicate and collaborate on-line. The new Google immediately took positive comments and was poised as one of the most promising tools of 2010. But the initial enthusiasm was short lived and Google waved goodbye to this initiative.

There are exactly 38 days depicted in the movie either partially or in full. Let’s hope that it will not take that many iterations of cloud services for someone to get it right.

PS: Office 365 does not have +1 Button

Migration form BPOS to Office 365

Today was Microsoft's launch of office 365. For Those organizations that are invested in BPOS Microsoft has provided a site with resources for transition. in reviewing the planning phases of transition - Microsoft anticipates the planning and preparation activities to take anywhere from 3 to 6 months. It's not clear if this takes into account the backlog that will be produced as existing BPOS clients embark on this endeavor. It will also be interesting to see how the 12th largest state and public sector organization is to move forward with BPOS for 33,000 state users.

Our mission

The Office365 Saturday (aka o365s) program provides tools, resources, and support needed for local event leaders to organize and host a free day of office 365 training anywhere in the world. These events seek to:

  • increase an awareness of office 365 and its capabilities
  • provide opportunities to network within the office 365 community
  • help develop office 365 professionals

How it started

Office365 Saturday was founded in conjunction with the release of the technology on June 28, 2011. That's when the preparation for supporting a first event occurred. o365s was one of the first office 365 customers securing an accountant that now hosts all the o365s events.

Funding and Ownership

The Office365 Saturday brand and website are licensed for use at no charge to both groups and individuals who seek to host events.

Want to host an event?

We’d be glad to help organize a successful event in your area. Organizing an event requires a lot of planning and hard work but the results as seen in the improvement of the community are well worth it. The following is an overview of what's involved in hosting an event.

A successful event is one that meets the expectations of the attendees. It is for that reason that events are chaired by individuals in the local community.

The o365s team provides the following resources to help organize and execute an event:

  • An event project plan outlining key milestones and activities to consider
  • A website that allows you to provide a call to speakers, sponsors, and allows for attendee registration.
  • Administrative tools to help with activities such as scheduling speakers
  • An event logo
  • An e-mail address
  • Lots of how-to documents to run your event
  • Will also provide mentoring and support as needed to ensure that your event is successful!

We're putting together a wiki to act as an event guide for event leadership, budget coordination, speaker selection, session scheduling, marketing, volunteer coordination, venue selection, catering, and of course, marketing and socializing!
